In 1947, the Government Fisheries department in Visakhapatnam established the Government Fisheries Elementary School, to provide education to children of the local fisher folk. Over the year’s absence of maintenance resulted in damage to the structure and lack of teachers, owing to this several children were not able to receive proper education in the area. The recent cyclone, Hudhud was also not kind to the already frail structure and destroyed it beyond use.
Since three years, the Lions Club of Visakhapatnam Dwarakanagar has been paying the teachers wages and supporting underprivileged children with tuition fees and teaching material in order to encourage the children to go to school. On seeing the devastation of the school and the impact it has had on the lives of the children, Lions members have decided to build a new school with modern amenities and teaching facilities.
Recently, Barry Palmer, Chairman, Lions Clubs International Foundation, laid the foundation stone to commence the reconstruction and renovation works. The club plans to reconstruct the building, ground up and provide all amenities required for the running of a modern school, under the guidance of Regional Area Coordinator Lion Vamsidhara Babu, Multiple Chairperson Lion Vema Koteswara Rao, Multiple District Coordinator Lion V Vijay Kumar Raju and local Lion members.
According to Barry Palmer, Chairman, Lions Clubs International Foundation, “Restoration is the stepping stone to rehabilitation. For any rehabilitation program to succeed, we must first be able to offer the security of a new place, for victims to be able to overcome the tragedy they witnessed. This initiative is an effort in that direction, and I’m happy that the Lions Clubs of Visakhapatnam Dwarakanagar have taken this upon themselves. I’d like to call on all to help with their effort to build the school, and help the children and community overcomes this tragedy.”
