The Lions Club of New Bombay, Vashi distribute books and stationery

The Lions Club of New Bombay, Vashi had undertaken a service project to distribute note books and stationery in the Adivasi village near Panvel.

Inculcating the importance of education and literacy in rural India, the Club aims at eliminating the stigma associated with education, hygiene and marriage. Providing a new life to young children by imparting skills and offering a source of livelihood for their parents, the Club has initiated a project to distribute stationery and notebooks as a step towards eradication of illiteracy, encouraging students of the Raigad Zilla Parishad to study.

The District 323A2 slogan for 2015-16 was ‘HEAL THE WORLD’ where the members had decided upon joining together to adopt a village, and provide them with the necessary resources to sustain their livelihood.

Led by the President of the Lions Club of Vashi for the Lionistic Year 2015-16, Lion Surendra Mandhane initiated the activities in the village with the provision of spectacles, distribution of notebooks, sarees, blankets and even sponsoring of lunches at an old age home.

These activities were conducted in 5 Adivasi Villages located at the foothills of Matheran, which is approximately 35 kilometers from Navi Mumbai.

On 29th July, 2016 the club decided to undertake one event at the Waghachi Wadi, Dodhani, Satichi Wadi and Tower Wadi Raigad Zilla Parishad Schools.

Members got together in a car pool to reach the location, interact with the locals and distribute materials among them.

The Zone Chairperson Zone – I for 2016-17 attended the 29th July 2016 event, along with his fellow Lion Members including District Governor 2015-16, 1st Vice District Governor 2015-16 and Second Vice District Governor.

Apart from Lion Dignitaries, the Tehsildaar (Collector), Gram Panchayat Sarpanch (Village Head Man), Assistant Commissioner of Police and Senior Police Officer were also present.

The members, who were all very humbled, are looking forward to engage school children and teachers in such interactive exercises in the future. The Club has planned an educational trip involving several children and their teachers so as to add a fun aspect to these events, while continuing to distribute notebooks, stationery and uniforms.
