63 million people suffer from vision impairment, most of who live in rural India. Astonished by the lack of medical assistance to underprivileged, the Lions Club of Doddaballapur in the district of Karnataka have taken it upon themselves to help those with eye diseases. For the past 17 years they have been conducting eye camps consistently on the first Monday of each month with renowned eye surgeon Dr. M.C. Modi.
The club provides free transportation, medical assistance and post-surgery care, making it easy for villagers to avail this service. All surgeries are conducted at Bangalore West Lions Eye Hospital.
Today, people from a 100 km. radius of Lions Bhavan come to the eye camp, where free check-ups, spectacles and all kinds of eye care facilities are provided. The Lions Club of Doddaballapur has facilitated over 12,000 people cataract surgeries and is recognized for its eye camps.
