Lion Tarachand Bapa Hospital & Research Centre is a thriving example of the old proverb, “From tiny acorns, might Oaks grow”. From a small milk centre, converted into a diagnostic centre - C.U. Shah Diagnostic Centre, by the Lions Clubs of Sion, in 1970, to the present day 65 bedded facility; the hospital offers affordable health care across the socio-economic spectrum.
This enormous project has been nurtured and metamorphosed through the generosity of Lions, and their faith in the ethos of Lions Clubs - service for the betterment of the community.
A decade ago, this diagnostic centre inspired two philanthropists, Shri Tarachand Dhanjee Mehta and Shri C.M. Gandhi, to convert the centre into a 12 bedded mini hospital with an operation theatre, performing routine surgeries. In 1989, another generous donation from the family converted the mini hospital into a full fledge hospital; christened the Lion Tarachand Bapa Hospital & Research Centre, and was adopted as a permanent project by the Lions Club of Sion.
In 1996, the Government of Maharashtra and Brihanmumbai Mahanagarpalika (BMC) offered the surrounding land, to facilitate the extension of the building, for enhancement of medical facilities.
While, LCIF, the biggest donor, contributed over Rs. 2 crores, in order to develop different areas of the hospital, Lions like Saryuben and Rajnikant Nanavati donated their entire estate to the hospital, to have it converted into a 65 bedded facility with state of the art equipment.
Today, the hospital is serviced by eminent health care professionals and houses a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and an Intensive Care Unit, offering medical facilities and care across multi specialities.
Says, Lion Dr. Ashok Mehta, Golden Jubilee President, Lions Club of Sion, “Our gritty determination and the dedication of our members has resulted in our joining forces with several humanitarian charities and is also proudly reflected in the five storey Lion Tarachand Bapa Hospital & Research Centre, boasting some of the most modern amenities and health care professionals in the country”.
Lion Tarachand Bapa Hospital & Research Centre, truly an exemplary model of Lionism!
