Lions of India: World Vision Project on Child Education

"Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country."

These words from John F. Kennedy’s speech penned by Robert Frost inspire countrymen to work towards a better community and in the process build a great nation. Taking a cue from the above sentence, it is time to ask ourselves what we can do to improve our country.

True to its motto of serving the needy, Lions Clubs have always worked towards building a healthy community. Lions Clubs of India under the leadership of Second International Vice President Lion Naresh Aggarwal has signed a MoU with World Vision India for Child Education.

As part of the agreement, Lions Clubs will undertake long-term development initiatives in selected government schools and World Vision India will be the implementation partner, identifying appropriate programs in the area of education for children.

Under this project, a donor can spend Rs. 500 per month to sponsor a child’s education; World Vision India will be the care – taker for the welfare and education of children. World Vision is also trying to rope in USAID for matching grants. Hence, when a donor pays Rs. 500, they will actually be sponsoring two children.

The project is set to commence from June 2016 and will be introduced in 10 mega-cities, namely- Delhi, Allahabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Coimbatore, Vizag, Trivandrum, and Bangalore. The World Vision Project’s goal is to fund 5,000 children in the first phase. Over a period of the next three years the number of children supported is expected to touch 25,000 children. These children will be supported till they complete their basic education.

As an Executive Officer, this project is a personal initiative by Second International Vice President Lion Naresh Aggarwal with Past International Director G Ramaswamy, as the coordinator. This project has the potential to become a legacy project if it garners the support of 2 lakh Lions.

The World Vision Project requests all Lions to give an encouraging response and feedback to this initiative as educating children is a way of ensuring a healthy community and nation. It’s your time to shine and become a real – life hero by sponsoring children and providing them the education they deserve.
